History

The name Soquel remains somewhat vague even in the founding of Mission Santa Cruz in 1791. Some tales describe the area as being occupied by the Sokel Native American tribe, while others refer to Suquer, a native leader who lived along the nearby creek. More certain is the fact that this California town was founded in 1853 and that the locals pronounce it "so-KELL."

The Spanish Portolà expedition was the first European exploration of Alta California, and it crossed the area on October 15, 1769. As they traveled northwest up the coast, they would camp at one of the creeks, but which creek is not known, as the expedition diaries do not give adequate descriptions. But Franciscan missionary Juan Crespi, who was with the expedition, recorded in his diary that they "halted on the side of a small stream, some four yards broad, with a deep channel, and much azure colored water, flowing so vigorously that it foams and forms whirlpools. It has margins of cottonwoods and alders. From its depth, it is perhaps impossible to utilize for irrigating all the plain through which it flows." Translated Herbert Bolton, based on the description, believed the location to be Soquel Creek.

Martina Castro, daughter of José Joaquín Castro who with his family was part of the second De Anza expedition to Alta California, where he arrived in 1775, was granted Rancho Soquel by governor José Figueroa in 1833. She was but one of many Castro siblings to become a ranchero in California.

In the Californio era, cattle were free-grazing on the Soquel and Soquel Augmentation Ranchos. In the aftermath of 1848, fortune seekers soon stripped the region's "red gold" – its redwood forests – to frame California's pioneer settlements. Founded in 1852, Soquel grew in the 1860s to the sound of logging in the mountains, with goods shipping from the wharf at Soquel Landing. Incorporated in 1874, a railroad traveled down the coast, and beachside resort Camp Capitola was born. The mills fell silent, and gradually Soquel began its turn toward agriculture.

The logging industry played a leading role in shaping the historical development of Soquel, California. A town rich in its historical development, in the 19th and early 20th centuries its lush forests of towering redwoods and Douglas firs initiated an "boom era" as timber cut from the area met burgeoning demands from a fast-growing California. Along Soquel Creek, sawmills emerged, turning raw logs into the lumber that built homes, bridges, and ships. However, such a lucrative industry nearly altered local ecosystems, depleting forests and causing ecologic changes.

In 1965, Soquel was the location of the first "Acid Test" party.

In 2021, the coastal town of Soquel, California had a population of 10,800 people. The median age was 41.6 years old and the median household income was $107,114. From 2020 to 2021, Soquel's population grew slightly from 10,721 to 10,806, representing a 0.8% increase. Over the same period, the median household income rose more significantly from $96,434 to $107,114, an 11.1% increase. The largest ethnic groups were White non-Hispanic (70.7%), White Hispanic (10.4%), Hispanic two or more races (5.85%), non-Hispanic two or more races (4.07%), and Hispanic other (3.86%). No households reported speaking primarily a non-English language at home. The vast majority (95%) of residents were U.S. citizens. In 2021, the median property value was $747,600 and the homeownership rate was 73.5%. Most residents commuted by driving alone, with an average commute time of 27.1 minutes.
